Following its milestone 20th anniversary, the Belfast Christmas Market has been recognised with the Outstanding Market Achievement Award 2025 by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA). This rarely bestowed honour is reserved for markets that demonstrate exceptional impact, and this year, the judging panel unanimously agreed that Belfast’s festive favourite was truly worthy of the industry’s highest accolade.
The award not only celebrates the market’s significant impact on Belfast’s cultural and economic landscape but also honours the man behind the vision, Allan Hartwell, Managing Director of Market Place, who has been instrumental in shaping the market’s success since first operating the event in 2004.
David Preston, CEO of NABMA,said:
‘’NABMA acknowledges the leadership, vision and passion of Allan Hartwell for the impact he has made on the City of Belfast over the past two decades. Belfast Christmas Market is regarded as one of the most diverse and multicultural markets in Europe, showcasing a vibrant mix of international and local traders and creating a magical experience that continues to captivate visitors year after year. ’’
As one of Northern Ireland’s most highly anticipated festive events, the Belfast Christmas Market attracts an impressive 1.2 million visitors annually, contributing an estimated £60 million to the local economy. Beyond its economic impact, the market is also a force for good in community support and business growth. Through its Jolly Big Business Boost initiative, the market has provided a platform for young and local entrepreneurs, helping them to showcase their products, gain exposure, and grow their businesses. In addition, Market Place demonstrates their commitment to social responsibility by donating Santa’s Grotto to a local charity every year, allowing them to operate the attraction and benefit from the proceeds. Over the course of its 20 years, Belfast Christmas Market has welcomed over 12,000 children through its free educational tours which are supported with a bespoke educational pack aligned to the curriculum.
Clodagh Cassin, Markets Development Manager at Belfast City Council said:
"The success of the Belfast Christmas Market is undeniable. When the inaugural market was launched with just 20 stalls, our goal was to create a festive event in a welcoming, neutral space that would attract visitors from across the city. Today, the market is recognised as one of the best in the UK, drawing visitors from around the world each year. It has become a remarkable platform for showcasing our wonderful city."
As the Belfast Christmas Market looks ahead, its legacy of tradition, economic prosperity, community support and festive joy remains stronger than ever. This award reaffirms its status as one of the most successful and beloved Christmas markets in the UK, a testament to the vision of Allan Hartwell and the dedication of the exceptional team working tirelessly behind the scenes.
